On 27 June 2019, the UK government quietly amended the Climate Change Act. The UK became the first major economy to pass net-zero emissions commitments into law. The law now requires the government to achieve net zero by 2050, and to have a credible plan for how it will do so. Unfortunately, such a plan does not exist, because it is not possible to reach net zero. In 2022, ClientEarth successfully sued the government for failing to actually have a credible plan to reach net zero as required under the updated Climate Change Act.
